How to Take Care of Quartz Worktops

Date Posted: 24th July 2023

When you get a new quartz worktop, you want to keep it looking fresh for the longest time possible. Luckily, quartz worktops are typically relatively low maintenance and easy to take care of due to their low porosity and high resistance. However, there are some cases in which your quartz may need slightly more care than usual. Our team of industry experts here at A R Quartz have put together a useful guide on how to take care of your quartz worktops.

Everyday Maintenance for Quartz Worktops

The easiest way to keep your quartz worktops looking as good as possible is to carry out general maintenance and cleaning. If you wipe your worktops after using them with soap and warm water, you’re unlikely to develop any harsh stains. After cleaning your worktops, always rinse with water and dry with a kitchen roll or a clean towel.

What to Avoid

Despite being quite forgiving when it comes to stains, there are a few things to avoid when it comes to taking care of your quartz worktop to prevent stains, cuts and damage.

The first thing to consider is always using a chopping board when cutting anything on your worktop. Despite being extremely hard-wearing, quartz can still be slightly damaged and scratched when using items like knives.

When it comes to spillages on your worktop, it’s important to get it cleared as quickly as possible. With acidic foods and liquids such as tomatoes, citrus fruits and wine, if you leave these on top of the surface, the resin within the quartz can be damaged. Another common problem in the kitchen is water and oil spills. Although these might not necessarily cause stains, if you don’t keep on top of the spills, a dull residue may be left on the surface and can dramatically affect the appearance.

Another consideration is how heat can damage the surface. Despite being able to withstand high temperatures to a certain degree, excessive heat can cause some damage to the countertop. A sudden change in temperature from room temperature to extremely hot temperatures is typically the cause of damage — It’s highly recommended to use rubber table mats or coasters until they have cooled down.

How to Remove Harsh Stains From Quartz Worktops

If you do find yourself trying to get harsh stains off quartz worktops, there are a few methods which can help:

  • Food stains can be removed with neutral soap and water with a wet dishcloth.
  • Ink stains can be removed with ethanol and kitchen roll, however, do not pour the ethanol directly onto the stain.
  • Grease stains can be removed with neutral soap and water with a wet sponge.
  • Limescale stains can be removed with white vinegar and a wet sponge.
  • Wine stains can be removed with diluted bleach and a wet sponge.
